Guilty Pleasures

It’s been a rough six months. Okay, wait. let me be totally honest: it’s been a horrific, terrible, worse-than-rough six months. I won’t bore you with the details.

However, I will tell you that I’m majorly in need of some guilty pleasures.

What kind of indulgences?

Well, I’ve let myself have a few of the secret ones: a long soak in a hot tub with candles and luscious handmade lavender soak, a slice of my mother’s thirteen-layer chocolate cake, French fries from the Big Dawg.

I’ve really indulged in reading this last month, losing the day-to-day stress in steamy novels while sitting under the gazebo with a Diet Pepsi (lime slice included, of course!) at hand.

While Monster #1 attended camp and Monster #2 visited Grandma’s house, I had three utterly pleasuable days during which I could sleep late, watch what I wanted to on television, visit with friends, write, and just basically do whatever I wanted. (I started to say I felt guilty for giving up maternal bliss for those three days, but we all know I’d be lying, so I won’t, okay?)

If I could choose a couple of fantastic guilty pleasures to indulge in before school starts back, I can already tell you what they’d be:

1) A trip to the secluded small-town beach we love to frequent. There’s something about walking on damp sand with the waves rolling in . . .

2) A pedicure, manicure and facial by Shari M. Oh, my God, the woman has magic hands and she does this massage thing with hot rocks on your legs . . .it’s like having melted butter rubbed into my skin.

Hmmm. If those are my guilty pleasures, my life is pretty dull, isn’t it?

What about you? What are your secret indulgences?

I too enjoy a long hot bath or getting lost in a really great book. :)

However, one of my guilty pleasures has to be playing video games. Yeah, I know it sounds a bit on the childish side, but there is just something stress relieving about playing Star Fox and blasting the alien invaders out of the system, or racing Mario Kart. What can I say? I guess I’ve never totally grown up. :)

  2. Hi, Lyn!

You know, I’ve tried to get into video games since my Monsters recieved a system from their uncle as a gift and I can certainly understand the appeal . . . but I don’t have the hand-eye coordination for it. I end up frustrated, LOL.

I know what you mean about the hand eye coordination thing. Some of those video games can be pretty involved!

At best, I’m mediocre in my game playing skills. My husband wins every time we play against each other. I do find it fun though, and I try not to take it to seriously, which means I’m laughing at myself a lot. :)

  4. yo dude,
    I’m sorry you’ve had a rotten time.

And I love your escape habits. Yeah, about like mine, but I prefer to call myself settled rather than boring.

  5. Oh, I can so relate to the massage, manicure thing. My other treat is a big bag of Malteasers, a cold glass of a good Chardonnay and a book in peace and quiet. Utter bliss!

  6. I’m boring too… a bath, a glass of chardonnay and a good book with all my children in bed sounds good to me!

  7. I’d have to say that one of my favorite indulgent activities includes curling up on the sofa with a slew of movies and just watching for hours on end. Baking my brain in cinema. Sort of helps when I’ve been workin’ a little too hard writing. :) Reading a fantastic novel with that Diet Pepsi One sounds terrific. Especially the slice of lime! Yum.

  8. Oh, Kate, settled works! I like that. :-)

Nell, what are Malteasers? Anything like luscious dark chocolate?

Hey, Rebecca, just having the kids in bed is an indulgence around here! My almost-thirteen-year-old is turning into a night owl like his mom.

Denise, I like the movie idea — I don’t usually watch whole movies, but I actually viewed three last week. It was really nice to let someone else do the story-telling!

  9. I think your indulgences sound great Linda Some of my favorites are sipping a glass or port and eating really nice dark chocolate after the kids are in bed, completely random web surfing where I just follow lots of rabbit trails, and making brownies and then eating a large portion of the pan.

A few other indulgences that I long for but won’t be able to enjoy again for awhile now that I have a new baby is going away by myself for a night or two, maybe meeting some friends, maybe just enjoying the silence in my own room at a bed and breakfast. I also love a long, lingering dinner with my husband with plenty of course and plenty of wine and a sinful dessert.

  10. Video games.
    Yahoo.com, miniclip.com
    or our brand new Wii.
I spent my high school years in arcades.
Even beat my boyfriend at the time one or two games.
My husband has no understanding, but I like to play.

  11. No dark chocolate for me, but Lindt truffles? Oh, yeah.
Mani & pedi combo – definitely.
    Add a massage? I’m there.
    Reading – also a favorite.

There’s a longer list, but I’ll stop there.

Unfortunately we don’t seem to indulge ourselves often enough. What’s up with that?
