Movies:
I love them! Though, it’s only been in the past several years I’ve been watching them on more than a special occasion. Movies, television, music, videos, magazine articles, another author’s story, myths, research books all can jump start a muse. There are so many outlets to inspire.
A few movies come to mind when I think of favorite movies.
300: Mercy, I really did like the movie for more than the scrumptious men. Absolutely great characterization!
The Skelton Key: The plot twist simply had me thinking out side the box. This one clearly made me go “what if?”
Underworld: This movie wasn’t a given. Yeah, I adore vamps and shapeshifters, but the movie went beyond my expectations. Underworld offered us a new realm to fantasize over. I can easily imagine gamers role-playing in this world.
Transformers: This one was a real surprise for me. I went for my children’s benefit, but came away cheering with them. Absolutely great movie! Transformers are too cool!
There’ve been a few others that have lingered with me after I watched them. Braveheart, Armageddon, Descent…What about you? Do you have any very favorites films? Have they inspired you?
Until later~
Mel

Ooh, good post! Some of my favorites…
The Lake House – loved seeing Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock back together, plus I think it’s a terrific love story.
Brokeback Mountain – beautiful, poignant, wonderfully made movie about soulmates. Wow.
Life is Beautiful – see it in its original Italian for the full impact. Amazing, heart-breaking pic about the Holocaust. Not a love story (well, not in the traditional sense) but still an amazing story.
When Harry Met Sally – one of the best 80s romance flicks, with great, quotable lines.
Before Sunrise – love the romantic urgency of this one, and the way you want the H/H to stay together even though they’ve only known each other a matter of hours. Its follow-up Before Sunset is a good one too.
And of course The Notebook is a tear-jerker (maybe too much so) but the young lovers storyline is a great study of how to put a romance together.
Can’t wait to hear what other people pick!
Some of my faves:
Trainspotting – Love, love, love this movie! although the scottish accents can be a bit hard to follow at times.
Amadeus – I was obsessed with Thomas Hulce (who played Mozart) for years after watching this….but I never saw him in anything else decent.
In the Name of the Father: Daniel Day Lewis is a great actor!
Breaking Waves: so, so bleak but so, so moving.
There are just so many…all the Harry Potter movies, and LOTR. PotC (the first two, I haven’t seen the third yet), Moulin Rouge (for the music), Chicago (for the music), The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (if you’ve read my first two books, you’d see how much it inspires me).
I also love The Italian Job, National Treasure and the Mummy movies. They’ve been great inspiration on the first of the two books I’ve got with Samhain next year.
Loves me some movies!
Hi Mel! I love every movie you named.
To add a few:
Gladiator – Maximus is the ultimate alpha male.
Tristan and Isolde – Some people will disagree with me, but I love the story and thought they made it well.
Find Me Guilty – The humor and believability of this movie – even given the fact that Vin Diesel was playing the part of a man years older – had me wishing the movie wouldn’t end.

I’d have to say my favorite movies are somewhat under the radar, so to speak.
Boondock Saints: Connor and Murphy’s absolute devotion to each other and their vigilante justice just speaks to me. It’s a beautiful portrayel of brotherly love and the line between right and wrong.
Erskineville Kings: An independent Aussie film starring Hugh Jackman before he was anybody. Another story of brotherly love, though much more angsty and dark. No less beautiful to watch, though.
Latter Days: A film about a gay Mormon missionary and his journey of self-realization, with the help of a deliciously flamboyant waiter lol.
And then there’s my not-so-emo favorite movie…The Devil Wears Prada. Because an entire movie about fashion is enough to make this material girl have an incident lol.
Interesting subject as my sister and I were just talking about the films we saw as children that stayed with us.
Our top choice: The Black Rose. It was an awesome romance adventure with Tyrone Power.
And second was The Lost Horizon, another powerful fantasy romance.
My favorite movies have always been fantastical, laden with special effects and if they included a handsome, bare-chested hero, all the better.
These films definitely influenced my desire to write fantasy romance.
But then, I also really enjoy movies that introduce me to experiences I could never know about otherwise: Trainspotting, Apocolypse Now, Platoon. Because noir interests me so much, I use it in some of my writing, too.
And I adore historical anything! Braveheart, Tipping the Velvet, Elizabeth I, Poirot in any Christie plot, Angela’s Ashes, My Left Foot (Daniel Day Lewis), Amadeus. So, I suppose it follows that I really enjoy penning historicals.
Add it all up: my inspirations are historical or fantasy romance with a touch of noir.
There are way too many movies that I could list, but here are a few.
I love both the Underworld movies! I think they are even planning a third one. I’d be interested in seeing where they go with the story.
I agree Gladiator was also a really good one. You couldn’t ask for a stronger male character.
One of my all time favorites has to be Braveheart with Mel Gibson. I love the passion and the courage of William Wallace (Mel’s character) I always cry at the end no matter how many times I’ve seen it.
Ever After (Drew Barrymore) is another favorite. I’ve always been a fan of fairy tales, but I like the twist they put on the classic Cinderella story. No magic, just strong characters.
Something’s Gotta Give (Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson is another good one. The characters are just so quirky and funny that I can’t help but enjoy it.
