How do you keep your authors straight?

There is no method to my book buying. No list making, no calendar of release dates. Generally, I have no clue when a book releases. One day, I look up and say oh yeah, I wanted that book. And then I buy it.

I think part of it is because I’m extremely impatient. If I had to focus on a book I wanted very much six months in advance, I’d go insane. Because I’d want it now. Now, now, now!

Sometimes, I even miss the release date. (oops) I’ll be browsing Amazon looking for a good book and I’ll see that something I had decided I wanted months ago actually released a good while back.

And pre-order? I can honestly say this is something I’ve never done. Why, I dunno, but I can’t make myself place an order for the book before it releases.

Best of all, it’s such a nice surprise to log into an epublisher site one day, or get on Amazon and poof! The book I’ve wanted forever is THERE. Right in front of me. A pressie just waiting to be opened. It’s a glad glad day and rejoicing all around. (you think I’m kidding)

So, I know that some of you do keep lists, spreadsheets, detailed calendars etc where you keep up with your favorite authors and upcoming releases you’re salivating over. What’s the method to your madness? How do you keep up with all the books you want or do you just do like me and go on binges and buy buy buy every few months?

  1. I used to pre-order at Amazon, but I ran into an issue in my local book store. I would pre-order as soon as the book became available and then I would forget about it. So of course I would be wandering around in my local B&N and pick up several books only to have them arrive in the mail.

    That was annoying.

I tried contacting the Amazon Support to see if there was a way of easily accessing my pre-order information, instead of paging through 9+ pages of orders, but no real support for the functionality that I wanted. Ah well… <geek>If they would just expose the info like they do with the Wish List as a web service..</geek> Oh Wait, the WISH LIST. Ah Ha!!

So I switched to using the Wish List functionality. That way I could keep track of what I wanted. This really helped my need for wandering around the book shop and purchasing and my desire to keep track of authors and new releases.

  2. Pre-order? Forget about it. I love what’s instantly available, too. That’s part of the seductiveness of e-books—they’re available for instant download. None of this waiting for books to arrive from Amazon. Although it is fun to get something special in the mail.

No method…just madness. LOL I rarely pre-order and it’s because I never get it on the release date like they say I would.

  4. What I do is put anything I think I might want on my Amazon wish list. When I find something I desperately want RIGHT NOW, I peruse my wish list and add a couple of “wants” to the order so that I can get free shipping. (Never mind that if I’d just ordered one book, I would have actually saved money. Oh no, we’re talking about serious book obsession here…)

Yeah, whoever at Amazon thought up the free shipping deal out to get a raise. A big one. :)
