The Things You Think You Want

Corvette

Okay, so I’m blatantly playing off the title of my upcoming release, The Things You Think You Want, but I’m really not going to tell you all about the book here. That will come later, on November 27th, (do you like how I shamelessly threw that promotion in there).

With Christmas just around the corner, I thought now would be a good time to talk about, well things.

When you’re young and just starting out financially, it seems like you can never accumulate enough of them.

I remember when I was in my early twenties thinking, wow, one of these days I’m going to own a Corvette, have a nice house and lots of great things to fill it with.

When I turned thirty, I got my first Corvette, (yes, that’s right, I’ve had a few I’m almost embarrassed to admit), and by this point in my life, I’d had a nice house for a while and many great things. It was good, but those things didn’t have the same wow factor I thought they would when I was twenty.

And when I turned forty, well, something terribly strange happened…

My priorities shifted from getting to letting go. From running the rat race, to quiet moments spent with those who matter the most in my life. And I realized things were just that. Things.

So, maybe it’s the holiday season creeping up on me, or maybe I’m just remembering all the sentimental reasons I wrote The Things You Think You Want in the first place, I dunno.

But I find myself wondering, how much do you really need to make you happy? And I’d like to issue a challenge. Before the season’s mad rush hits, take a moment and do a little soul searching. What’s on your list of must haves this year?

What are the things you think you want?
The things you think you need?
And what really matters most.

All the best…

  1. Mary, I’m at that same place too. Instead of accumulating more stuff, I’m getting rid of things I don’t need. Less to clean. Pick up. Dust.

    Great post.

  2. Thanks Natasha!!

    All the best…
