figuratively speaking...

One of my personal goals for 2008 was to learn something new every day that I could. Now whether or not I’ll remember it is another matter, but here is what I learned today.

To prevent confusion the proper noun “Braille” is written in lower case (“braille”) when referring to the writing system.

January 4th is the Feast Day, and the birth date, for Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton, the first native-born United States citizen to be canonized. She was born January 4, 1821.

In 1885, the first recorded, successful appendectomy was performed in Davenport, Iowa by Dr. William West Grant. The patient was Mary Gartside, age 22. (I’ve looked for further info on her, just out of curiosity, but I’ve yet to find it – if YOU find it, let me know!)

Today is also the day that Columbus left the “new world” on his return voyage after his big discovery.

I may never do anything with that information, but then again…I am a writer, so ya never know.

Back to my latest hobby…the snorkeling.

What will you learn today?

  1. I had to send that picture to my husband, Bobbie. We discovered the joys of snorkeling in St. Thomas and can’t wait to go again – but, um, I think I’ll wait until the snow melts, thanks! LOL
