Winter blahs
Anyone get the winter blahs? (Not to be confused with, man is the holiday season ever going to be over angst!?) It probably won’t surprise anyone to hear I really don’t like winter. Heck, I live in southern Alabama partly to avoid snow. Plus I hate being cold. (My west coast friends have spent months warning me about Nationals this year. Bring a sweater? Really? In July/Aug? Considering I was the only person I know not complaining about the heat in Atlanta or Dallas, I’ll have to defer to their wisdom in this case.)
So about those winter blahs. I don’t get much writing done in December. I think it’s because of the general craziness of the month. When January rolls back around and things settle back to normal though, I expect to be able to get things done. As it turns out, not so much. It’s cold. It’s rainy and dreary. And I just want to curl up on the couch with a good movie or book. I prefer to write outside on my patio and I can do that most of the year, but not now.
This makes me wonder. Is it winter that actually slows me down or being forced to break from my preferred method? Do you find it easier to work (whatever your work might be) during a particular season? Or is it being forced to break a routine that hangs you up?

Oh, man! I live in NY and actually like cold weather, but I get the winter blues too. Years ago, someone told me it had to do with the fact that there’s less sunlight and it brings you down. I believe that. In fact, back when I was a working stiff, I bought this special alarm clock that simulated sunrise and sunset because I could NEVER get up on time when the sun wasn’t even up yet! That crazy clock worked like a charm. It would start to glow around 5:30am and by 6am – my usual wake up time back in those days – it would be nice and bright in my bedroom and my eyes would open willingly. Hmm… maybe I need to find that clock again. Today I overslept by about 2 hours! Good luck with the winter blues and know that you are NOT alone! :)
I live in New England — begrudgingly — and I have major winter doldrums. It’s too grey. Honestly, how can anything grey make you feel good? Well, okay, maybe bunnies or kittens…But grey skies? And then there’s the grey snow. Ugly, dirty mounds of bluck. I bought a lamp from Northern Lights to help prevent Seasonal Affective disorder, but I have to admit that I’m still more sluggish in the winter than any other time of year. I don’t think it’s the change in routine, because I work in the same space all year long. It’s the grey….
If I slowed down or stopped working because of winter and gray days I’d NEVER get anything done : )
Where I am, it’s harder to write on nice days. We don’t get them too often (and then not until late June or July) and I feel obligated to soak up what sunshine there is. I don’t have a patio, per se, but I can probably set something up to take advantage of nice weather. If and when it gets here.
Bianca, I could use a clock like that!
Kerri, I agree. Grey is just not fun. I’ve been thinking about getting one of those lamps.
Cathy, you’re a better woman than me. ;) I’m afraid if I lived that far north I’d never get anything done lol!
Not me. I get summer blahs, when it’s too hot to be near the electronics, and brain don’t work well ;-)
In January, it is summer here. Me no get much done ;-)
Have a lovely day! :-)
