Simple Minds, Simple Pleasures
I thought I’d post today about simplicity. I’m a simple person. Read into that any way you want to. smile I have a cell phone I use to make calls. A camera I use to take pictures, and to occasionally shoot videos. And I have an e-reader with which I read books. Now I’m techno-geek like the best of them. I have an i-Pod, a new laptop, a high speed computer with cable modem, better programs, faster download speed… But when it comes to reading, I like it simple.
I recently attended Celebrate Romance, a heck of a fun conference in South Carolina (I think it’s in Denver next year.) And there, Chrissy B. happened to attend as well, carrying a bevy of e-reading devices. I saw the Kindle, a Sony reader, a Palm Pilot, an eBookwise (my favorite) and a few others I can’t remember. But my favorite remains the eBookwise.
I’m not as busy as a lot of people, so I don’t need an electronic organizer. My wall and desk calendars at home work well for me. I don’t need to store phone numbers or tasks in my e-reader; I have a Day Runner for that. No, I need an e-reader to read books. And the eBookwise does that for me.
It has a backlight, big plus. The capacity to store a butt-load of books, and you can interchange the memory card at your whim. It takes different formats, but not PDF, unfortunately. (Though I have heard rumor there’s a converter around, somewhere.) But I have the e-librarian program that allows me to convert html and .doc/.rtf files into my eBookwise format.
However, the real reason I purchased an eBookwise is its battery length. When I sit down to read, I read a book until it’s done. And the eBookwise lasts up to 12 hours at a shot, and I’ve recharged that sucker many, many times since owning it.
I download many of my books from the eBookwise website, a simple USB cable that downloads files for me. I also purchase books from Fictionwise, MBaM—Samhain (of course), and other publisher sites. And I like rating what I read.
The eBookwise might not be the best e-reader for everyone, but it works for me. Like I said, simple minds, simple pleasures. :)
My next Samhain release will be out April 15th, so to celebrate tax time, check out the feline shifter books coming out that Tuesday!
Happy Wednesday!

Hi Marie, I followed your post from the cafe. I’ve been thinking about an ebook reader for a while. Right now I have to read on my PC and it’s not even a laptop.
Like you I am a simple person, the less complicated a thing is, the happier I am. I like what you are saying about the eBookwise although I use PDF and would rather not have to reformat them. I really am addicted to the paper books but you can’t get a number of books that way. In addition I really believe that ebooks will be taking over in the not too distant future. I will be keeping my eye on the eBookwise. Thanks for your thoughts on this.

I love my ebookwise too! An added benefit I never thought about – it’s much easier to eat/drink and read an e-book. No juggling the paperback while sipping on coffee or eating lunch. Don’t tell me I’m the only one who reads while eating breakfast, or lunch, or snacks (I try not to read at dinner with the hubby.)
I take my ebookwise out and people are curious about it. Hope to keep converting them. :)
Great post, Marie!
Hey Natasha, good point about holding the ereader. It’s SO much easier to handle an eBookwise and a cup of coffee at the same time. Read on,sister!!
And Sandie, that was one of my concerns when purchasing an ereader. I had already bought a ton of ebooks in LIT and PDF format, when I’d sit in front of my computer to read. But I sucked it up and bought the eBookwise anyway, simply because of the backlight and long battery. That long battery was a must for me, since I’m a self-confessed book-aholic. I typically will read at least 2 or more ebooks in one sitting (long into the a.m.) Heck, this past weekend I read The Bounty by Beth WIlliamson and Into the Myst by Maya Banks, back to back. Great books, and great on my ereader, next to my husband in bed, in the dark. :)
Best of luck to anyone trying to find out what kind of ereader they want, because there are so many to choose from. And yes, I love holding a book in my hands, but when I look at my overflowing library, I’m glad many of my new reads are electronic.

I understand simple…I still don’t own a cell phone. LOL
I do want to get an e-book reader though. I’ll probably have to order one because you can’t buy one around here yet. I think the Ebookwise will be my choice, because I like simple. :-)
