Getting Crafty

I have been on a new kick lately. Writing is a great creative outlet but I began wanting more. I wanted to get even more creative. I wanted to get crafty.

Now I’ve never been a very crafty person. I’ve gone through stages of it but the joy, the excitement would always wear off. Like the time I painted ceramic Christmas ornaments with my friends. We would work for hours on those things. I eventually got over it but I still have all of my ornaments.

Then there was the scrapbooking. Oh my I even signed up to be a representative for a well-known scrapbook company! What a failure I was, both at scrapbooking and the business. Why did I try and start this when I was about to have a baby? (As a matter of fact my first workshop was cancelled – due to the fact that I went into labor that morning. No joke.)

A couple of months ago I discovered all of these crafty blogs. These women are making gorgeous stuff. I’m especially fond of the mixed media crafts. Looking at all of it made me think, “I wanna do that!”

So I made my first project. I started out small and easy. I made a banner – two of them, one for my office inspiration board (which is empty right now but for the banner – I think I need more inspiration) and one for my daughter. They both turned out so cute!

Karen's homemade banner

I got the template from Pink Paper Peppermints — http://kindawonderful.typepad.com/pink_paper_peppermints/

She made a wonderful banner that hangs in her kitchen! So fun.

Anyone else into crafts? If you’re going to RT wait until you see the cute little tags I made as giveaways! Yes I’m going craft-crazy. But I’m having a lot of fun.

    Hi Karen!

I’ve gone through craft stages as well but it only lasts as long as it takes to ‘conquer’ :)

e.g I tackled a crochet swirl pattern to make chair back covers. My living room chairs needed 5 total. I got through the pattern and was elated. I made the 2nd one, struggled through the 3rd then gave them away to someone who only had 3 chairs :)

Kudos to you for committing. Cute banner!

  2. Karen, I love crafty stuff! I’m so impressed with you. I wish I had the drive to be more crafty. I’ll just live second hand through you! LOL :)

  3. I think most writers have some other hidden crafty talent. I also did scrapbooking – and now have no time for it and tons of pics and stuff left to scrap. I sew, but I did that way before writing, since I come from a LONG line of seamstresses. I used to make candles, but again, I don’t have as much time to do it as I’d like. Recently I started beading, and I LOVE that. Bracelet/necklace sets mostly. It’s fun and easy and projects go so quickly that you can move to the next one before you get bored :)

  4. Good for you, Karen! Sometimes it’s fun to do something more visual than writing, if you know what I mean. I’m far too crafty for my own good. It comes in waves. I’ve crocheted afghans out of boredom—although usually it’s been as a favour or gift for someone. I used to macrame, too. You know, back in the 70s when it was cool. ;) Nowadays my crafting bug usually gets mollified by costume building—sometimes even when I don’t techncially need a new costume. lol

  5. So weird but I can’t see anyone’s comments on this page! Oh well I’ve read them via email and I want to thank everyone for stopping by and telling me how you like to get crafty. :)

  6. I would SO love to be crafty. But I’m not. Wah!

  7. I love all things crafty. Your banner turned out really cute.
