Conventions!

These events are a big deal for whoever is involved. Sometimes they are seen as a jolly and other times it’s all work. No matter which end of the spectrum it falls on, even if you go to the same convention year after year, there is one thing you can count on – it will be a unique experience.

Last week the cutie took me to one of his conventions. We arrived in Lexington Kentucky and stayed at a beautiful hotel on the edge of town. Because I was the spouse it was easy to sit on the front porch and relax. Registration for the hundred invited people started at eleven and by five the cocktail hour had begun with the dozen or so spouses joining in. Dinner was delicious, even for this picky eater. Starting at eight the next morning, the cutie was giving his paper and talked about all the details and discoveries with others afterwards. From there we chose to take a historic home tour [instead of heading to the horse races] and had a fabulous lunch before enjoying the Mary Todd Lincoln and Henry Clay homes.

Unfortunately we had to leave this event early but are looking forward to going back to Lexington next year and staying the entire time. This low-key, intimate and serious function is useful for the cutie and gives me a chance to unwind a bit.

Now, it’s a week later and the beginning of RT Booklovers Convention! Maybe it’s because I’m more involved this time or that it’s up north with over a thousand attendees that makes it feel like a convention on steroids!

The hotel is bigger, the energy level is higher, and the anticipation is way up there. Okay, I’ll be honest…I packed more things, about twice as much clothes, for this part of our trip than for any other part. Today at five the convention officially starts for me with the eBook Expo, followed by a big party full of costumes and dancing. I’m really excited for it all to begin. For the next two days it’s all out. From eight-thirty until six, except for two hours at lunchtime I’m scheduled for something. It’s interesting how very different from my usual work plan this event is and yet right up my alley…I love to talk books.

My feet are throbbing just thinking about it and yet there’s a smile on my face. I know I’m going to have fun, meet up with friends I see often and those I’ve only met online or once before. And, without a doubt, I’ll try to make it to next years as well.
