Guitar Store Parking Lots

If it wasn’t for guitar store parking lots, I would never have finished my last book on time.

Last December, I had a book due. With the holidays fast approaching and work giving me conniptions, I kept getting further and further behind on my writing. So, in desperation, I turned to my husband and said those words he longed to hear – “Honey, let’s go to a guitar store.”

Now, when I say “guitar store”, I mean “guitar store parking lot.” Our kids are well-behaved, but there are far too many opportunities for accidents to happen in a guitar store. So the DH would head into the store, I’d set up the DVD player for the kids, and plug in my laptop.

Over the next hour or so, the kids would get the rare opportunity to watch a movie in the van (we drove to Disneyland and back without setting the machine up once), my husband would enjoy perusing the guitars, and I’d work on the book. It was a win-win all around.

Would I recommend it on a regular basis? Not really. But it sure worked in a crunch.

Thanks to guitar store parking lots and a tolerant family, I got the book done and turned in on time. And now, whenever I tell my husband I’ve got a deadline, my husband starts to grin.

Some people have home offices. Others like to write in coffee shops or the library. Me, I’m a fan of guitar store parking lots.

  1. I usually opt for the coffee shop within the bookstore or the pub downstairs from both, but I can see the appeal of a parking lot. So few distractions. On the other hand, no ready supply of coffee. I know that doesn’t bother you, but I would go mad. ;)

  2. Coffee shops are good, too…but hard to manage with three children in tow. :) I may not drink coffee, but a decent hot chocolate is never turned down.

  3. Kate! I’m not alone! :P I long for the parking lot of my kids’ karate dojo. They go to class for about an hour 2 to 3 times a week, and I get an entire hour of silent, uninterrupted writing time.

And the bonus is, I’m not home, so the “guilt” over not doing housework and chores isn’t there. Heh

Lately, that’s the only time I’ve been able to get any writing done.
