Birthday Rituals

I bake and decorate doll cakes. My mom made doll cakes. Between her three daughters, we once figured she had made 62 angel food cakes with the perky little blond doll perched on top.
I have only made 13, and as you read this I am in the process of making my 14th for my eldest daughter’s 9th birthday. We also had to trade in the bee-hive wearing mod girl because after so many years of sugar bodices her plastic skin turned an odd color of orange. So, our little angel of the birthday cake was upgraded to a tanned and toned Malibu Barbie (which was the cheapest one we could find at our local drugstore). My girls love her and don’t mind at all that their father had to chop off her lower legs to make her short enough to stand in the cake.
We did have one bump in the road last year when my 5 year-old informed me she didn’t want an angel food cake, but still wanted a doll cake. As you can see from that photo, a Bundt cake worked just fine.
I’m certainly no pro at cake decorating. I’ve got warm hands that melt the frosting in the squeeze tube, so my flowers don’t have much form. But, my girls love them and so I pray I’m lucky enough to keep making them for years and years. 62 might be out of my reach, but I bet I break 40.
Tell us, is there a special birthday ritual at your house?

Oh, how sweet! I bet my daughter wuld LOVE a doll cake.
I always order her cakes through this awesome bakery in town. They have the skills to put things on their cakes I could not even venture to try. Like Snow White and Jasmine. LOL!
