Writing and Remodeling

Writing and remodeling don’t mix. I don’t know what I was thinking when I said I thought I could have workmen traipsing in and out all day and still write.

The noise bothered me.

My husband and I started this kitchen remodeling project in January (if we don’t count the two years we used as research time, pre-selecting appliances, etc.) and it’s now April. The actual work of the project started two weeks ago when the granite company came in to demo the kitchen countertops and make the template. After that, we had a kitchen without a sink, a cook top and countertops for ten days. But this was no problem. I like eating out.

Still, I thought I could ignore the noise and continue to write. Ha!

Then the real remodeling job started. Men arrived to take out the old appliances and slide the new refrigerator into the correct spot. Then they took the old refrigerator down to the basement. I don’t understand why so much noise was involved─I mean, it’s not like they were ripping out the cabinets─but, trust me, there was a whole lot of banging going on.

The day after, a different group of men came to install the new countertop. This time, sounds of banging weren’t my biggest distraction. These guys used sanding machines and a saw to cut into the granite. Talk about ear-splitting, nerve-shattering noise!

I sat in my door-less office and tried to concentrate. I know lots of authors who have small children in the home and they manage to work. Surely, I could handle a little bit of noise, right? Wrong. Oh, so very wrong. For days, I attempted to concentrate. For days, I failed.

We’re now at the end of the remodel. The man putting in the tile backsplash is here as I write this post. Before he arrived, I thought “Tile is quiet. He won’t make much noise and I’ll finally get some work done.” I was oh, so very wrong again. I’d forgotten tile had to be cut to fit. Did he cut the tile in the garage, thus reducing the amount of dust and noise? Pulease.

Once this remodeling project is finished, we’ll move on to the next one. However, one thing will be different. I’ll plan on writing at night.

  1. “Still, I thought I could ignore the noise and continue to write. Ha!”

It’s a learned skill and children do help immensely with developing it.
    ;)

  2. Two words. Ear. Plugs.

And your remodel is almost done? Pfft. Took dh six months to do one of ours. He did all the labor himself. I nearly brained him toward the end of it. Did I mention I was pregnant?

So, note to remodelers. Not while your wife is pg. Seriously not kidding.

  3. Any remodeling job is noisy. And if it is done by dh is it noisier.

  4. You’re a brave woman to jump from one remodelling project to the next. Good luck. I know I can’t write with any noise. I feel you pain.
