I cringe in the face of technology

Seriously, technology freaks me out! Okay, with some things. Microsoft Vista? Just saying those two words make me tremble and not in a good way. I’m not EVEN going there until I have to!

I used a normal camera for years and would just scan in photos I wanted on my computer—that way I wouldn’t have to figure out all the crazy buttons on a digital camera.

An MP3 player? I JUST got my first one for my birthday (man do I regret not jumping on that bandwagon earlier! Gym time ROCKS now!)

I tend to dread figuring out technological things, but once I’m in the land of understanding I can’t live without. Seriously, how did I get by before?

Now comes my newest challenge. The cords. OMG there are so many! If I were more organized I’d have drawers or containers labeled for each. Instead, when something needs charging or downloading, I go to my massive pile of cords and try and figure out what’s what. I plug in one after another—if I can find them!—until I figure out what goes to what. Is it this one? No, that’s for the camera. Is it this one? No, that’s for the Ipod. I’m like stuck and unable to use half my things, cause I lost the chargers or can’t figure out what’s what. Sigh.

How about you? Are you a technology geek? Or do you run in fear and maybe even have a cassette player at home you still use? :)

  1. I am technologically challenged!

  2. Oh I definitely run in fear, Shelli. “Microsoft Vista” can leave me swearing a blue streak, and I’ve had it for 4 months now.

And what is a MP3??? I’ve gone from LP’s to 45’s to cassettes, to 8 tracks, to CD’s and frankly I am not sure it’s worth it to tackle the next generation.

And cords? Please don’t even go there. Next to my bed is an extension (and surge protector) with room for 10 plugs, and it is full (although some of the box type plugs on it take up the space of 2 or 3 regular plugs).

    Technology??? Bah Humbug!!!

Shelli, thanks for the great opportunity to VENT.
I hadn’t realized how fed up I was untill… LOL

  3. Estella, me too obviously! LOL

Sandie, you’re just like me! See it’s like once you get the nerve to tackle a new technology thing, they’ve invented another!! We are peas in a pod!

    Hi Shelli!

I embrace technology wholeheartedly. It’s the brands who try to reinvent the cord so that you have to buy from their company that drive me crazy!

I love the USB cable. Mine fits my camera and cell phone. I bought a PDA and of course the USB attachment was different, for no good reason!

I was going along my merry way with Windows XP refusing to bow down to Vista but was the new PDA compatible with XP? Of course not! Into the pits of Vista I went.

Thank god for Google! I couldn’t survive Vista without it. :)

  5. Joy I never thought that my USB cables could be interchangeable. Do you realize you just made my day!? My phone charge has stopped working. But this…this could be my answer! LOL. You rock!

  6. I am semi-technology challenged. Certain things I have no problem with and then there are things I just can’t figure out.

Like switching over my TV to the DVD player. Sigh. I used to be able to do that but since we got the new TV last year I still haven’t figured it out. And that makes me feel dumb.

And my son can figure out all the bells and whistles on my digital camera waaay better than I can. So I’m thankful he’s around. LOL

  7. Right, Karen! Isn’t it scary when the kids know more than we do? Especially when they’re like barely even teens? My niece is a genius!

  8. There are eight people in our house. All have mobile phones, all have ipods, all have those portable game thingys, all have cameras (some even have two) and the list goes on. If you hear of a woman being strangled by a charger it’ll be me.

I’m with you on the fear of the unknown. But once I know what to do I’m okay, just don’t change it on me. Like getting a new PC and not only moving to vista but word ’07. (shaking uncontrollably)

    Great post Shelli.

  9. Rachel! That is so true. Word 07 freaks me out to no end! Heeey, maybe I just fear change?

  10. I am very technologically challenged. LOL

I don’t know how to program the DVR. I have an mp3 player, but I just tell my hubby what songs I want on it and he does it for me. g I know how to skip folders on it, but I still haven’t figured out how to get the radio to work.

I’ve gotten better. Hey, I have a blog and a website, which I update on my own. But I find all the technology totally confusing. I don’t even bother trying to keep up. By the time I’ve figured something out, it’s obsolete anyway.

  11. I hand it to the husband and say, “Make it go.”

Then again, he is a God. He managed to get Vista off my brand new laptop when people said it was nearly impossible, and managed to get XP put on (another miracle).

    I love that man. ;)

Basically, I know how to plug things in and power them up. Other than that, I’m hopeless.

  12. I hand it to my husband and say, “Make it go.”

But then again, he’s like a God. Really. He’s performed two miracles recently. He got Windows Vista off my new laptop and put Windows XP on.

If that’s not miraculous I don’t know what is.
