Being with your own kind
Hey, y’all! I’m writing this post from the Marriot in San Francisco. That’s right, I’m far and away from home (well, not too far from since I’m from Seattle). I’m surrounded by tons and tons of women—and the token men, all who love to write novels within the romance genre.
I met my editor (Laurie!), my agent Laura Bradford, and all kinds of friends and publishers within the industry. I am going 100% full speed, I am overwhelmed, my feet are killing me and yet…I am in my element. I thrive on this. I feed on this. This one time a year to spend with my own kind. That’s right. These people get me.
Writers are a breed of their own. They understand each other. It’s a lifestyle and a language that seems like the outside world can’t quite comprehend. Only another writer can understand the constant doubt and second guessing a writer can go through. The angst and the hours spent in front of a keyboard trying to make a first kiss scene sparkle. I know a fellow writer will understand me, when my family might start demanding why I’ve not been outside all day.
But I know this ‘only you get me’ thing isn’t just with writers. Surely, others have something like this in life. Whether it be a music thing, video games, knitting…something. Some kind of activity or time sucking goings-on where you only feel this deep understanding from others who are doing it with you.
So you know for me its writing. If you’re a writer, do you feel the same? And if you’re not a writer, what part of your life can you relate this to?

Glad you’re having such a wonderful time at the convention, Shelli.
Someday I hope to experience what you are at the moment—being around others of my kind. :-)
Shelli, I can’t think of anything else that would have the same kind of gathering of “addicts” (the good type).
From what I hear, feeling the need to write sounds very much like an addiction, and one that I am grateful so many of you ‘suffer’ from. I ‘LOVE’ reading the results of it.
Enjoy yourself and come back refreshed and ready to write some more.

We are both out of the mainstream..
Thankfully At least once a week I find like minded people.
