Mixed Emotions

ho-hatWell, it’s that back to school time again for us young mother writers. You know the time—when we can actually have our house stay clean for more than 22 minutes straight. That time when other people’s children stop raiding our refrigerator. And when that Andy Williams song,” The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” pulls that unfathomably joy chord in our summer-beaten- down hearts.

This year, however, I have some mixed emotions about it all. My child seems so much older this year. She’s scaring me a little with her obsession with fashion too. School shopping was actually FUN for her, and she even begged me to buy her a hat.

A hat?

Yeah. Check out the picture of it. (That’s little rhinestone type beads on the rim.) Unbeknownst to her, I refer to it as the “Ho-Hat”. Not because it reminds me of Santa (ho-ho-ho) but because it looks like something a hooker would wear as she moonlights as a taxi driver. (But on a six-year old it looks cute.)

Anyway, the silence around me now is weird. The house seems so empty. In fact, I find myself suddenly missing the constant shoving of her Webkinz in my face all summer as I tried to blog or check e-mail.

How on earth will I get any work done with all this quiet?

Uh, don’t worry too much. I’m sure I’ll muddle through somehow. I just need a little adjustment period to get myself back on a writing schedule. I’m really excited to get back into it again, but that doesn’t mean I still don’t miss the kiddo.

How are you adjusting to the back to school season?

  1. Love the hat with the rhinestone beads – very cool. She has good taste! I’m happy to have Amanda back in school and Emily back at college. But my hubby retired so that’s a big adjustment – didn’t realize he talked so much. LOL

  2. The hat reminds me of the one Julia Roberts wore at the beginning of Pretty Woman. Yeah … a ho hat. :)
