Stimulate the economy - buy books

This blog thing snuck up on me! I almost completely forgot except that I got a reminder yesterday. Ack! Things are so crazy around here – a new semester, a new book I’m trying to finish and hand in, a new freelance job showing up in the email that I just can’t pass up because, well, we’re in a recession. Any opportunity to beef up the bank account is welcome.

That brings me to the subject of my post. I know people are worried. Around here we don’t seem to have taken as large a hit as some other places. I feel blessed that we’re doing okay. So here’s MY pitch for an economic stimulus package. (I know, using the word stimulate on a blog for romance writers and readers is risky, but here I go:)

Buy books. I’d prefer you buy MY books, but hey, I’m not greedy. Books are relatively inexpensive. Ebooks are even more inexpensive. They’re cheaper than a night at the movies and last longer.

You’re supporting the arts. You can recycle them – read them again and again. You can give them as gifts. They make AWESOME gifts. There’s no worrying about size or color, they’re always a perfect fit. You can get them for anyone, from babies to the elderly. (while you’re at it, check out some YA books by the Samhain authors here. We rock. Just sayin’.) Have trouble reading? Audio books, large print books, and set that ebook font to LARGE. There’s no excuse for not giving books!

If more people bought books, I think we’d lick this recession in no time. So buy books. Tell your friends about books and authors you love. Don’t feel guilty about spending the money – you’re stimulating the economy!

Oh, I guess I should do some kind of author promot-y type thing, so here you are: In February I’ll be Author of the Month over at Enchanting YA books (http://enchantingreviews.com/young_adult.html). There will be reviews and interviews and maybe a chat in there. So stop by the site or their MySpace page.

And BUY BOOKS!

  1. No matter my financial circumstances, I’ve never stopped buying books — trimmed the budget occasionally but never stopped. I consider them a necessary item, so great advice!

  2. I found a wonderful used book store in hometown that takes trade ins. Goddess knows I have plenty to trade!

I’ve never stopped buying books, though I sometimes have to limit my purchases to so many every few weeks.
