I couldn't cry

So my daughter started kindergarten for the first time the other day and I feel a little guilty. Why you ask? Not because I was sending my baby off to school and she was crying. Noooo not at all. I felt guilty because I was celebrating! Like doing handsprings on the grass celebrating! I was about to start 5 days a week of 2.5 hours of freedom!

No I’m sure the dryness in my tear glands came from me having sent my kid to preschool the last two years. I cried the first day I took her there, but now we know the drill. And my kid was thrilled to go to school!

So tell me, am I the only one? Did anyone else rejoice their kid going to kindergarten? Or did you all cry?

  1. I was definitely a crier. sniff

But now that’s she’s going into 2nd grade, I’m doing my share of cartwheels! LOL!

  2. I cried sending my oldest and while I’m pretty sure I’ll get a little teary when I send my middle guy off to Kindergarten next week, I’m looking forward to him going. To appease my guilt over that, I tell myself he’s the type that will LOVE school and that my eagerness for September 8th to roll around couldn’t possibly have anything to do with me being able to write more during the day. :)

  3. I cried heartily when my little boy started pre-school, but I celebrated when my moody teenage son entered junior high. What a difference a few years makes!

  4. Jennifer, Sydney, Ethan, I know I must be the minority here! Like I said, she was just so excited though and I’ve already had her in preschool for a couple of years (and the preschool had a very big kid school feel!) so I think I was over my crying spree. Plus I’m DYING to get back to writing and the gym!

  5. I’m with you Shelli—no crying for me either. My oldest, now 12, had gone to day care and preschool from the time she was 5 months old. Separation was not an issue for either of us. My youngest, now 9, was home with me until she started preschool when she was 4, but she was probably as glad to have time away from me as I was to do things around the house or run errands without worrying about her : )

Now, with them both in school, summers are waaaay to short. And rainy weekends during the school year are waaaaaay too long : )

  6. LOL! Um…cry? No, I think I celebrated her growing independence and mine too! I didn’t open a bottle of champagne but I did eat a few chocolate chip cookies and reveled in the silence for a while.

  7. I am not sure that i am crying or not, but I am not happy for the reason that i becomes free for some time in day.

  8. When my twins went to kindergarten, they filed onto the bus with big smiles, waved, and didn’t once comprehend the magnitude of the situation. “Don’t you understand? You won’t see mommy for hours!” They waved a couple of times, then turned and the bus trundled down the road. Sniff sniff. This year they started second grade and for weeks prior I would say “Did I mention that school starts in two weeks?” So much so that on the first day of school, emails came pouring in, congratulating me on school reopening. I’m like the guy on the staples commercial, joyfully carting through the aisles, tossing in school supplies. I’m pretty sure I heard a choir of angles sing as the bus pulled away this year.
