Do Opposites Really Attract?
Some of my favorite stories are the odd couples of romance. Vivien and Edward from Pretty Woman. Sky Masterson and Sarah Brown from Guys and Dolls. What about Shrek and Fiona?
I love the love stories where the couple in question couldn’t be more different on the surface, but as the movie (or the book, or the play) develops, you see how perfect for one another they really are. Sometimes our polar opposite can shake us out of our comfort zone and show us what we’ve been missing.
Maybe my affection for opposites attract stories is part of why I had such fun writing The Ghost Exterminator: A Love Story. On the surface, the rebellious ghost exterminator Jo and stodgy I-don’t-believe-in-ghosts businessman Wyatt couldn’t be more different. But when they have to work together to zap a pair of prankster ghosts, Jo and Wyatt are forced to look below the surface, where this unlikely twosome find much more than they bargained for.
So what’s your favorite opposites attract story? When Harry Met Sally? It Happened One Night? My Fair Lady? Or maybe a real life I-can’t-believe-those-two-got-hitched like Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft? Who is your favorite unexpected pairing?

I loved Sarah and Sky from Guys and Dolls, too! And the Captain and Maria from the Sound of Music and I even thought Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy were kind of an opposite pairing.
Oooh, good call on Pride & Prejudice. I love that book.
