10 Reasons I Love My Job (And Contest)

Posted by Sydney Somers, 12/11/09 08:43 AM

As I writer I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with my job. Some of it (okay most of it) is hard. Damn hard. But thankfully the parts of writing I love more than makes up for all the days I want to light my laptop on fire and pitch it off a cliff. :)

So here’s a list of things I really love about about being a writer.

1. It gives me a reason to avoid hanging out in the man cave (a.k.a the garage) with my husband. I live in Eastern Canada. It gets damn cold up here in the winter. Cold enough to freeze my butt to the chair no matter how many blankets he shoves at me.

2. I get paid to make stuff up. Seriously.

3. I get to give two people a Happily Ever After, even when the hero or heroine didn’t see it coming.

4. It’s highly entertaining to watch peoples expressions change when they learn that by “writer” I didn’t mean an author of children’s books.

5. Not many other careers involve looking forward to embarrassing my sons when they’re older by whipping out my sexy book covers and reminding them their mother wrote this.

6. I get to play with witches, demons and shape-shifters whenever I want and never get hurt.

7. A deadline is damn good excuse when you want to avoid socializing with people that drive you crazy.

8. I have an excuse to by a new laptop every other year. Like it’s my fault a stupid plot hole or uncooperative character makes me slam the lid down a little too often.

9. I get to spend hours (and hours and hours) writing something that might make someone else temporarily forget about the bills that need to be paid, the crappy day they had at work, the mountain of laundry waiting to be washed, or the kids and pets overtaken by the effects of a full moon.

10. Because it’s romance and it’s all about the moment. The moment when the hero and heroine meet, whether it’s for the first time or the hundredth. The moment when a heated argument makes them realize something has irrevocably changed between them. When they’re a breath away from that shake-you-to-your-core first kiss. Or the moment when they’ve finally figured out that no matter how much of a pain in the ass the other is, they belong together, they’re meant to be.

Those are just some of the reasons I adore my job! How about you? What do you love most about your job? Post your comment and be entered to win a download of my lastest release, Primal Hunger. Contest open until midnight December 13th. Good luck!

  1. I love my boss. He gets that I am a single mom and there are things I have to do for my child (not as much now that she is older but I have been here 10 years).

I love to learn the new software that I get to use all the time.

    I love the money LOL.

I love that I am only 10 minutes away from home.

I love when it is after April 15th.

  2. I get to work in my pajamas.

I get to stare at mancandy pictures all day looking for the perfect mouth.

I can take a sick day with no note!

New books are research, not money wasters.

  3. Sydney, I love your 10 reasons. Please don’t enter me for the contest since I already read and LOVED your fantastic Primal Hunger. I hope you are already working on a new Pendragon Gargoyles story.

    If not, WHY NOT???

I will say that I love my job as a mod. I never dreamed I would be chatting with “REAL AUTHORS” , even if it is via the internet. LOL

  4. I get to meet and work with new AND experienced authors.

I get to be here for my children as they need me, or don’t as they grow older lol.

There is no rush on getting home to make dinner or to do a quick load of laundry.

I don’t have to worry about dress code or makeup!

  5. 1. I get to sleep with the boss.
    2. I get to work in my pjs.
    3. I don’t have to wash the dishes if I don’t want to, or make the bed. I wait for the maid but she never shows up. Seems she’s too busy reading romance novels.
    4. I get bonuses when the boss man gets his bonus, too. Says, “get somethin purdy, darlin”
    5. I get to play Playstation 2 or Dance Dance Revolution with my daughter. She thinks I’m playing but really I’m getting my exercise. OH, and I totally suck at it, too. The DDR part, not the exercising. She’s just too quick.
    6. Oh, did I mention I get to read in the tub everynight before bedtime with the door locked so the monsters don’t come in to interrupt?. grin

Love your reasons, Sydney. Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays to you and yours!

I can skip off work and got to a movie Friday afternoon if I want to.

Reading is really research…no, really it is. :-)

  9. I don’t have my “dream” job yet because I am still in school but once I do I will love it because I get to combine my two favorite things food and nutrition!!!

  13. 13 Jane

Thanks for the wonderful list Syd. Almost makes me wish I’d pursued that writing career I had in mind when I went to university to get the English degree I ended up with, but if I had I’d never have ended up with a job working with the most dedicated and hard working people I could possibly imagine … and those folks are exactly what I love most about my job.

  14. 1) The computer thing — just got a brand new one today!

    2) Tax deductable romance novel purchases. Woohoo!

    3) It’s a great conversation starter (or stopper in some cases)

    4) Starting with nothing and ending up with a physical thing you can point to and say ‘that’s mine’. Not everyone gets that sense of accomplishment.

So most days the joy narrowly overrides the desire to pitch the laptop out the window. Lately the margin has been very narrow indeed. Thanks for reminding me of the good stuff Sydney.

  15. 15 Pamk

I really like my boss. He’s been my boss almost 17 yrs out of the almost 20 i’ve been with my company. We’ve worked together so long that he doesn’t bother me and i don’t bother him lol. I love that I know my job backwards and forwards. and the money isn’t bad either.

  16. I love that we only work three day weeks.
That we get 30 minute breaks every 2 hours.
The friends that I’ve made there and my checks.

  17. Great post! Both my day job and my writing are home-based, so I love being able to be here when the kids get home from school.

  18. I have the best job in the world. I watch my grandkids for my daughter and it’s brings me so much pleasure to watch them learn and grow. The youngest is 23 months and a kick in the *ss. Now if I could just remember how to potty train??? To much fun!!!

  19. I love my job, because I get to meet so many different people every day, and I can help most of them to have better lives. Some I find jobs for, some I find training for, some I just listen to them rant and they feel better. I feel that I make a small bit of a difference, and sometimes that is all anyone can do. I have the most understanding boss in the world, and she has been there to help me through one of the most difficult times of my life.

  20. I am straddling the fence right now. My first book is comming out in April, and I loved every aspect of writing it. The edits are fun and challenging and I am rejoicing in every new thing I learn.
In the mean time, I’m a banker. I enjoy it for the most part and if I didn’t have this burning need in me to write, I would love this work. Helping kids with the first ever bank account. Budget planning, visiting with all my regulars. And I work with an amazing team too.
But it all pales compared to sitting in front of a computer and bringing my dreams to life. I can’t wait to hear the first “I loved your book!” I can’t wait to say for the first time “Me? I’m a writer.” Or, “I’m sorry, I can’t make it, I have a dead line to meet.”
I imagine there will be a lot of times when I will wonder why I wanted to be an author, but for right now, I love everything about it!

  21. First off, congrats to Nicole. Your name was drawn via Random.org to win the download of Primal Hunger. Just drop me an e-mail (sydney@sydneysomers.com) with your preferred download format and I’ll take care of the rest. :)

And don’t worry Sandie, not only is another book in the works, it releases next month.

Thanks for all the great comments everyone. I’d say we’re all in agreement that it’s a little easier to get the job done when you enjoy your job. :)

  22. Awesome post Syd.

Although I want my real job to be writing full time one day, right now I work part time as a law librarian. I love it. I actually enjoy working with attorneys, the research is fascinating, the pay is good and the office environment is wonderful. I work with great people and when I grouse about having to get up and go to work each day, I remind myself that lots of people work truly difficult, sucky jobs. I sit on my butt and surf the Internet.

One day I’ll sit on my butt and surf the Internet in my jammies.

  23. Hi, I think your website is interesting very colorful. Good job! I feel helping job seekers finding their ream home jobs are a fulfilling quest. Good luck in your quest too.
