Motivation
A lot of writers, when asked what motivates them to write, say things like how much they love to tell stories, create characters and entertain people. I agree, to a point, but I’m going to be completely honest here and say that the most powerful motivation for me is a waitressing uniform and a canoe.
Research close to home
For a few years I was obsessed with genealogy and managed to get a substantial family tree put together, along with a lovely collection of documents, books and photographs. I’d long since moved past the point where I could get information out of living relatives, having already exhausted their knowledge (and annoyed them with my nagging.) The problem was, I’d concentrated on gathering only the information that would get me back a generation, always planning to come back and collect family stories at a later date.
